Object Description:

Bronze coin of Pherai dating to the 280s-270s (no later coins of Pherai are known), found in Room 2 of Building 10 at Kastro Kallithea (Thessalia) in 2010. Obverse depicts the head of the nymph Hypereia, whose head is turned slightly to the left and is wearing a wreath of reeds. Although it is not clear due to preservation, there is a fish swimming upwards to the left of her head, and she is wearing a necklace and earrings, as is evident from other comparanda. Reverse depicts the Thessalian goddess Enodia wearing a chiton and a wreath, mounted side-saddle on a horse, facing front, carrying a transverse torch across her chest. Above left of Enodia is a lion's head water spout. Below the horse is inscribed ΦΕΡΑΙΩΝ. (Information entered by Gino Canlas, sources: Triton XV and Nomos 4 auction catalogues)
