Iron Sword in Remains of Sheath from Abandonment Deposit of Ashlar Building in the Lower City of Stymphalos (Peloponnesos).
Iron Sword in Remains of Sheath from Abandonment Deposit of Ashlar Building in the Lower City of Stymphalos (Peloponnesos). Iron Sword in remains of sheath: length of 0.81m. The sheath itself was of perishable material, leather or wood, but its iron edge was well preserved along its original outline together with a pair of bronze or copper bands that joined the sides together where the baldric from which the sword hung was attached. The blade is longer than the Roman gladius but does not resemble typical Greek swords either; its lenth would have made it suitable as a slashing cavalry sword.
